Spotlight Special
Posted Sunday, April 20
Q: What is a Spotlight Special anyway?
A: A Spotlight Special signifies the first appearance of a particular item in the store (e.g. we collect swimwear donations in the back until the Summer Surf & Sun event; from that point forward swimwear will be marked and sold as donations are received). Spotlight Specials usually take place in anticipation of a holiday or a change in season (e.g. winter coats, mittens and boots are spotlighted in October in anticipation of winter and toys are spotlighted in early December in anticipation of Christmas).
May 1-3 Summer Surf & Sun - Bathing suits, beach towels, yard toys, etc.
July 5-7 Holiday in July - Decorations for all occasions
August 14-19 Fall Changeover Week - Out with the old, in with the new!

In 1971, the JLSC established and opened the Junior League Discovery Shop, which has since become the organizations one and only fundraiser. The Junior League Discovery Shop, which quickly outgrew its first two locations, is now located at 316 West 7th Street in Sioux City, Iowa and offers for sale to the public gently used clothing, shoes, toys, housewares and furniture.
The Discovery Shop benefits the community and JLSC in several ways. First, by providing funds for JLSC projects and training; second, by providing quality merchandise at affordable prices; third, by donation coupons for free merchandise to community agencies for distribution to their clients who may be in need of clothing or household goods; and fourth by providing a means for a person to recycle items while also receiving tax credit.
For over 30 years, JLSC has found this fundraiser to be beneficial for the organization as well as the community at large. Each JLSC member is a part of the fundraiser, donating thrift quota throughout the year, as well as assisting the shops operations by working shifts in the store. During the organizations 2001-2002 year, the Discovery Shop grossed over $149,000 to benefit the Siouxland community.
The Discovery Shop is open year-round, except for major holidays and Sundays. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The majority of thrift donated for sale in the store comes from Junior League of Sioux City members, however the organization also accepts donations of clothing, housewares, shoes, toys and furniture from the community at large. Anyone wishing to donate thrift to the Discovery Shop may do so by taking there gently used items to the shop during regular business hours or call the shop manager at 712-255-0072 or email at jlsc@juniorleagueofsiouxcity.com to make arrangements. A signed receipt will be issued to the donor for tax purposes.
